Featured Question:

“Why & for what reasons does a company splits its share price?”

The main reason is that it helps bring the share price down - without negatively affecting existing shareholders.

Many times, a company's share price may reach a certain high level - a price where it becomes difficult to buy.

This means that a smaller number of investors are able to afford it.

Example: More investors can afford to buy shares priced at Rs. 200 vs a share priced at Rs. 15,000.

In a split, nothing in the company fundamentally changes. they just create more shares.

Example: A company announces a 3-for-1 split.

This means that each share will be divided into 3 parts.

Say you own 10 shares. After the split, you will own a total of 30 shares.

But, the price of each share is now 3 times lower - which means more investors can afford the share.

This increases liquidity - making it easier to buy/sell shares of the company.

A split is often done by companies to signal to investors that the company's future has more growth ahead.

This is why often, after a split, share price rises - even though the underlying company remains the same.
