CHAPTER 1 – TRADING TIME FOR MONEY.
He talks about how he started from his school days. In this chapter, he
talks about 4 different streams of income he created. Here he discusses the streams of income he created from the age of 13 to 17.
1. Freelance Web Developer – He talks, “At the age of 13, he
started learning coding from the free websites he could find at that time
on the internet, e.g., W3schools”. Nowadays, there are really many great
free sources to learn such fantabulous skills that add to your resume as
well as they give a real sharp skill to start up something new later in
life. He gave a few months to his brush up his skills and then tried to
get on websites (like GetaCoder.com, Fiverr, Upwork, etc.) where you list
up your skillset and people hire you for your skills at an hourly rate or
a fixed rate. He started by designing websites for different all around
and ended up making about $1,000 from it. As he says,” A $1,000 was really
a lot of money for me as I was a kid and I didn’t have any other streams
of Income”.
2. Part-Time Tutoring – He started tutoring at a Math and English Study Center called Kumon. He shared his experience saying,” I asked the instructor, her name was Alison, I said, Hey Alison, I’m 14 now and I am legally allowed to work part-time. Can I get a job”? He started by getting a salary of £4 an hour then in two years it got raised to £5 an hour and then when we became 18, the rates further raised to £6 an hour. He tells how he enjoyed when people came in with their problems and then solved it, but never enjoyed the part where he had to take tests and then check them.
1. 3. Close-up Magic – When Ali joined university,
he started learning close-up magic at the age of 17. He started going
around in balls and earned about £150 in a night even sometimes. He
explained how many people other than him, who also knew magic and were
even better than him but never thought of monetizing the art. He
later shares the biggest financial lesson he learned from this.
“If you wanna make money, you do have to add value to other people's
lives”.
Explaining it later, he told that if you are trying to monetize your
hobby it's actually the best part as you are doing something you love and
at the same time you are loving it. As he continued,
“No one ever cared about my magic. What they cared about? Was the
experience I was giving them, and I have taken that and applied it to
all the other streams of income as well”.
